She’d just have to talk to InuYasha…

Yeah… that’s it… she’d talk to him!

But that was a LOT easier said then done…

Kagome and Sango headed back to the village, Sango had invited Kagome to live with them for the time being. They had offered InuYasha as well but he just grumbled about humans and their stupid futons. So she guessed he was better off sleeping back in trees and acting like their great protector… like the old days had been once before.

The time had grown late as they returned back to the hut, Miroku and InuYasha were sitting in silence, Miroku was staring at the fire looking bored and InuYasha was staring at the fire, legs and arms folded with the Tetsusaiga leaning across his arms as he looked into the fire, looking very thoughtful and serious.

Kagome and Sango walked into the hut and Sango looked at InuYasha who, strangely, didn’t look up to greet them, or even notice that they had come back in. This was an odd way for the hanyou to act… well… odder then normal that was…

Sango looked over at Miroku “C’mon, let’s go to sleep, Miroku.” She said, nodding and hoping he’d get the hint already so they could leave InuYasha and Kagome alone to solve a few things.

Unfortunately she got stuck with the nosey and annoying husband…

“But Sango, it is hardly night out, and we have been resting most of the day, there isn’t much to do. And I’d like to know more about how Kagome and InuYasha’s journey had gone.” Miroku said, looking completely innocent.

Sango could see behind that bullshit mask of his.

She sighed and walked over, grabbing him by the ear “No, you’re going to bed.” She said firmly, nodding.

Miroku winced but stood and followed, not liking the prospect of his ear being ripped away from his skull at the moment. He followed Sango down a short hallway and then into a room.

All was silent.

Kagome was standing at the door, her hair still wet from the hot spring and towel was in her arm as she looked at InuYasha who had moved but didn’t stop staring at the fire.

Silently Kagome walked over and put her towel away back into her bag before sitting down next to InuYasha, looking at the fire in a way much like he was. Her dark brown eyes strayed to the hanyou every once and a while but were quickly brought back to the fire.

InuYasha’s finger started to tap on the ground irritably.

Kagome looked at him; a bit worried she had annoyed him without really doing anything. But she didn’t care much at the moment before looking back at the fire and sighing softly, pulling her knees up to her and wrapping her arms around them, resting her head on top her knees.

InuYasha couldn’t stand it anymore. “Are you going to say something or not?! It’s really starting to piss me off!” He snapped, looking at her. But instantly wished he hadn’t snapped at the young miko, seeing how upset she was starting to look.

“Well sorry!” Kagome snapped, her depressed state turning into anger quickly. “Next time you start talking then!” She argued; putting her hands on her hips now as she glared over at the infuriating boy next to her.

“Feh, whatever…” InuYasha grumbled, looking back at the fire.

Kagome blinked, surprised by the sudden admission to defeat from the normally very argumentative half-demon. “What’s wrong? Are you sick?” She asked, her temper flaring down as quickly as it had started as she put a hand to his forehead to feel his temperature.

InuYasha swatted her hand away softly but didn’t look away from the fire. “I don’t get sick, you know that by now.” He pointed out.

Kagome sighed and rolled her eyes “You have had to have gotten sick one time or another, you may be half demon but you’re half human as well.” She pointed out, folding her arms but her tone not being very challenging at the moment.

“Feh, like that matters, I don’t get sick, that’s it.” InuYasha said stubbornly, folding his arms as he looked at Kagome and then at the fire again, muttering another ‘feh’ under his breath.

“You’re so stubborn…” Kagome muttered, sighing and shaking her head. “But your temperature is just fine… so I don’t think you’re sick…” She said, nodding “But are you feeling alright? You’re not acting like yourself…” She said softly, blinking.

“Hey Kagome?” InuYasha asked, glancing at her before looking back at the fire yet again.

“Yeah?” Kagome asked, glad he was finally going to tell her something, or tell her why he wasn’t acting right. ‘Maybe I should document this…’ Kagome thought, grinning rather humorously before looking at InuYasha’s serious face.

“What was wrong? When you left… I could smell your tears so don’t bother trying to say nothing…” InuYasha said, looking over at her now. A mixture of emotions in his eyes, he was angry… and upset…

Kagome was going to ask him why he was acting so weird but then it clicked…

He thought she was upset with him… not just with him, but the whole concept of being with him…

He thought she was rejecting him…

“InuYasha… I… I was worried… alright?” Kagome asked softly, figuring she’d get it over with now.

InuYasha looked about to answer before his ears twitched. He growled and stood up silently, walking down the hall and opening the screen door to Sango and Miroku’s room.

Both the monk and the demon slayer fell over and out into the hall, both having been leaning on the sliding screen door to get a better hearing of InuYasha and Kagome’s conversation.

“Feh, knew it…” InuYasha grumbled, glaring at the two nervous looking spouses.

He walked over back towards Kagome and reached down, grabbing her hand and pulling her up. “C’mon we’re going for a walk…” He grumbled, still in a sour mood now, a blush apparent on his face but only from close view.

Kagome nodded and they headed out of the hut and down the road, looking around at the water that reflected the night sky. “It’s nice out…” She said softly, grinning. “It’s almost the end of October… we can go to my era and have a Halloween party.” She said, grinning and looking at InuYasha, smiling.

InuYasha blinked at her, not bothering to ask what the hell a Halloween was, or what an October was…

“Well… spill already…” He said impatiently, looking at the girl expectantly before looking back ahead of him.

“Oh... I just…” Kagome stopped and searched for the right words. She couldn’t be blunt, that would just make InuYasha weirded out and probably avoid the subject at all costs…

“You talked about building a house for me… once you settled everything with Kikyou…” She said softly. She could tell InuYasha’s face was red without even looking at him and hoped he wouldn’t start changing the subject.

“I… yes…” InuYasha muttered; his face, as expected, was red at the moment as he scratched behind his head in a nervous manner. “Feh, what do you expect me to do? You’ll just whine and complain if we sleep outside or at Sango and Miroku’s for a long time.” He added, folding his arms again.

Kagome smiled at his attempt to cover up his embarrassment but hid it before he could see and start yelling at her for being stupid and smiling at stupid things…

“I mean…does that mean you want me to stay here?” She asked, looking over at him and folding her arms to keep in warmth in the cold night air.

InuYasha saw this and automatically took of his red haori and draped the fire-rat cloth over her shoulders before re-folding his arms and looking back off, still not answering her question.

Kagome soon got worried he would say no and held his haori tightly in her hands, pulling it around her tightly. It was amazing how warm it felt, it looked rather uncomfortable and very light so she doubted it would have kept her warm but it did. She looked at the ground, half-afraid to hear his answer now and looked up when she heard him start to speak.

“Of course, idiot. Do you think I would have gone and gotten you from your realm if I didn't want you here with me?” The hanyou asked irritably, grumbling as though it were the most obvious thing in the universe.

Kagome smiled softly and then nodded, looking back at the ground, still smiling but looking more serious now. “InuYasha… I guess I just wanted to tell you that… I love you.” She said, nodding and looking at him again.

InuYasha blinked, his face once again red but it’s not like he hadn’t heard her say that before. “Eh… what for?” He asked, rolling his eyes again.

“I just wanted you to know…” Kagome said, nodding. “But InuYasha… I just… wanted to know if you had thought this all the way through.” She said softly, glancing at him from the corner of her eye before looking back at the ground once again.

“Feh! Course I have!” InuYasha said indignantly, snorting and looking back up at the sky.

“InuYasha… do you ever intend on asking me to be your mate?” Kagome asked softly, looking over at him.

“I… um… yeah…” InuYasha said, getting even redder by the minute as he looked at the ground, trying to hide his red face from Kagome. “Why are you asking me all about this now?” He asked, looking over at her.

“Because, InuYasha… what would you do when I die? I’ll be old and grey and you’ll hardly look a few years older!” Kagome snapped, looking at him. She didn’t mean to snap at him, but was distressed at the moment.

InuYasha opened his mouth but quickly closed it, completely dumbstruck. He looked at Kagome, not saying anything and his mouth open.

When he finally came to his senses he closed his mouth. The hanyou looked down at the ground, his face heated with shame of being so stupid to not have even thought of that possibility. He thought everything would have worked out one way or another once he had told Kikyou he was staying with Kagome. He thought everything was going to be perfect… but it was far from that.

Kagome sighed “I was thinking… maybe… with the jewel…” She said softly, looking down at the pink orb that she wore around her neck and was gently in her hand as she displayed the ever so pure Jewel of Four Souls or the Shikon no Tama. The jewel so small and beautiful, the jewel that brought them together and kept them together… the jewel that could have destroyed all of Japan and more then that even! It had saved them and nearly destroyed them… it would be a chance to trust it again, but she’d try it.

“I can use the jewel to become a half demon!” Kagome affirmed, looking at InuYasha with firm and sturdy eyes. “I can use it; I know I could use it to become a half demon!” She pointed out, nodding.

“No.” InuYasha said sharply, looking at her with sudden protective eyes.

“Why not? We’d have the same life span then! And you wouldn’t have to protect me so much anymore if I could fight for myself with a hanyou’s extra strength and agility!” Kagome pointed out, putting her hands on her hips and leaving the Shikon no Tama to dangle around her neck, glowing in the fading light around them in the crisp autumn air.

“No way in hell! I won’t let you go through that! You’d spend your life only torn between two worlds, too strong and weird looking for one and too weak and weird looking for the other. You won’t know what to do with yourself. You’ll be hunted down by demons and feared and shouted at by humans. Letting you go through with that is almost the same as if I would let you go through jumping off a cliff and hoping something stops your fall besides the ground.” InuYasha snapped, looking at her with fiercely determined eyes now.

Kagome could tell there was no arguing with the stubborn half-dog demon but sighed and looked at the ground. “If you made it… I can too… and you’ll be with me! And Sango, Miroku, Shippo, Kirara, Kaede… and my whole family. Sure it might not be easy to make friends but I can try!” She said determinedly, looking at him and hoping that he would start to falter on his decision now.

“Yeah, and what about your personality? Do you think you’d still be the same exact Kagome once you’re half a demon?” InuYasha asked simply, looking back at the sky. “Kagome, the girl so pure she purified tainted Shikon shards with just a touch… you’re a priestess… why is it that you want to lose all of that? Become something people would spit on instead of look up to? Why would you give that up just for me? I won’t let that happen to you…” He said softly.

“I don’t care! I’d rather lose just some stupid social status then die and have you suffer!” Kagome shouted, her temper flaring at his ignorance as she folded her arms and looked at him, stopping in her tracks and turning to face him. Her expression softened “InuYasha… you don’t deserve any more pain… I don’t want that to happen… I don’t want to die and then leave you here to suffer for the many years to come… I don’t want you to watch me grow older while you look the same as ever… I don’t want it…” She said quietly, looking at the ground now, her bangs shading away her eyes from InuYasha’s view as he stopped as well to look at her.

“So… So until we can figure this out… I can’t be your mate, your wife, or girlfriend or whatever it is…” She said softly

InuYasha nodded simply “You can make it back to the hut alright?” He asked blankly, his voice a monotone that made him sound like Sesshomaru, and not looking at her but finding a new interest in a rock some few feet away. He sighed and looked over towards her direction but didn’t make eye contact.

“Yeah… I can… but where are you-“

“I’m sleeping in the Goshinboku tonight…” InuYasha said shortly before walking off. He didn’t even run this time, as usual that he would have done. He just simply walked, his head facing straight forward and looking into the forest.

Kagome stood and watched him for a few seconds before nodding with a sigh “Okay, InuYasha…” She said softly. The miko turned back around and headed back down the path towards the village and towards Miroku and Sango’s hut.

InuYasha easily jumped into the giant tree that had been as close to a home as ever for him. He didn’t know how to feel at the moment… Kagome’s words echoed in his head and they stung him horribly but it felt numb.

He knew she was right...

He felt stupid for never even thinking of it before…

InuYasha was prepared to die when Kagome did… but she would sit him into oblivion if he ever told her that. Not to mention it would be hard for him to see Kagome wasting away in front of him while he would only look a few years older.

“Damn…” He whispered softly; leaning back in the sturdy branches of the Goshinboku as though maybe it could help him with all his problems, shout something to him that would solve everything… so that he could ask Kagome to be his mate.

Just the thought of that made his face turn red again. Hell, she didn’t even want it to be like they had any ties to each other! Let alone be his mate.

The thought made InuYasha grow depressed… He could understand why she didn’t want to have ties with him… it wasn’t like he was being rejected unfairly after all… but still… rejection hurt like hell. Especially coming from someone he had finally told that he loved.

In fact… he had given up a lot just to be with Kagome! He vanquished his dreams of becoming a full demon, he chose her over Kikyou… and SHE HAD THE NERVE TO TELL HIM HE COULDN’T HAVE TIES WITH HER?!

InuYasha went from depressed to aggravated very fast, but his temper was quickly cooled when he realized how Much Kagome had given up to be with him. And that she didn’t want to tell him that, he could tell she didn’t want to say that to him, but she was doing it for him, not for just her. But she wanted to keep him from getting hurt by her, and until they figured out something, she was right…

Actually… that just made him even more pissed then before…

He couldn’t believe this! What the hell did he do to deserve all the shit that was being thrown at him?

Well… besides the obvious!

The hanyou sighed, calming down his temper before he lost control and went back to the hut only to make Kagome even madder then he was now…

He’d sleep it off… maybe an idea would come to him while he was asleep, or when he was awake…

InuYasha had just been drifting off to sleep when he soon heard a loud scream echo through the night air. His golden eyes widened as he recognized the scream easily. Forgetting all state of anger he jumped out of the tree and darted towards the source of Kagome’s frightened scream.

He raced through the forest, only to find Kagome hadn’t been that far from him. Stupid girl must’ve wanted to come check on him, and sure enough a blanket was lying somewhere along the ground.

Kagome was kicking and hitting with all her human strength to try and break free of the demon’s hands.

The demon was in somewhat of a human form, except the two large wings on his back and the two extra pairs of arms, four of which were holding Kagome down, and she was still putting up a pretty good fight against him. His hair was a bright yellow color to match his wings.

“You have it, don’t you? I can see the jewel… let me have it or I’ll devour you!” The demon hissed; his voice surprisingly high-pitched.

“No you don’t!” InuYasha shouted angrily, running forward and ready to draw the Tetsusaiga but didn’t want to hurt Kagome in the process. So instead he aimed to hit the head with his sheath, hoping for his grip to loosen on Kagome enough for her to get away.

He hit something, but when he looked, he was surrounded in moths, all swarming around him, reminding him of that time a while ago when he was fighting with another moth demon. Hopefully this one wouldn’t be such a big pain in the ass as the other one.

He was soon proved wrong when he realized that the moth’s wings were not real wings, they were all sharp and hard, and they cut into his exposed flesh of his hands and face. “Damn…” He growled, waving around and soon jumping up high away from the swarm. He looked around and spotted the moth demon still holding Kagome a little ways away. “Get away from her!” He shouted, aiming to land over by them.

He landed and swung his sheath at the back of the demon’s head, once again only to meet a pile of the cutting moths.

“Sadly, your strength and speed are only half demon… but you’re still a pain and have interrupted my plans…” The demon hissed, glaring at InuYasha from some feet away.

Kagome glared at the demon before biting down hard on the hand that was clamped over her mouth. The demon recoiled instinctively and Kagome moved to try and shake away from him. She got her arms free and was about to hit him.

Then the demon grabbed her by the hair, holding her head tightly in his grip. “Don’t try anything girl, or I WILL kill you.” He snarled, ducking easily from another attack from InuYasha who swore loudly behind him.

Kagome winced as his tight hold that was pulling on her hair. “I said let me go!” She screamed, bringing her free hands up and slapping him. A burst of bright pink/white light glowed from her hands and the demon shot back, flying a few feet into the air before landing.

“Heh, perfect!” InuYasha shouted, grinning and unsheathing the Tetsusaiga and running forward “Wind sc-“ He stopped at mid-swing as the moths came back, cutting into his arms and blocking his view.

“Heh, it seems that the half-mutt doesn’t want his bitch harmed… stubborn aren’t they?” The demon asked, smiling at InuYasha and then over at Kagome who blinked.

“What did you call me!?” Kagome shouted angrily. She started towards him, fuming now. “Listen you! I don’t care what else it means, it’s an insult where I come from and you’re not calling me that!” She snapped, folding her arms.

The demon smiled “Very well… I didn’t want to have to wait but it seems that now I have no choice but to have patience. Once the jewel is tarnished then it will have to go to another priestess… or someone who can purify the jewel.” He said, grinning.

InuYasha started forward again, finally free from the moths and was bleeding pretty badly, even though the cuts were small there were a lot of them, making it much bigger deal now. “Wind Scar!” He yelled, raising the Tetsusaiga and plowing it into the ground blade first. A glow emitting from it and cutting into the ground forming a flaming trail of light shooting towards the demon who pulled out something quickly.

“Heed this half demon! I will have my revenge! That jewel will become black with taint at her blood!” The demon shouted, pulling out what seemed like a long pole. He shot up from the line of fire right before it was about to hit him. He pointed the pole at Kagome and before InuYasha had time to react something shot out of the pole and landed right on Kagome’s left arm.

“Kagome!” InuYasha shouted, looking over at her frightened for her safety before turning a furious and loathing glare at the demon still staying a few feet above the ground. “You’ll pay for whatever you’ve done!” He growled, raising the Tetsusaiga and swinging it forcefully at the demon. A beam of light shout out and this time the demon was now encased in the light, still laughing as he slowly disintegrated within the flames of the wind scar.

“Kagome!” InuYasha shouted again, sheathing the Tetsusaiga and running over to her.

Kagome smiled weakly “I’m fine, just a little shocked is all…” She said, nodding as she put a hand over her arm and blood leaked through her fingers, spilling down her arm. “It’s not… as bad as it… looks…” She said softly, wavering from one side to another and her eyes became heavy. She started to fall but InuYasha caught her easily in his arms and ran off towards the village, hoping she would be alight.
